So, another profession in threat !! :) :) Photographers Beware :P :)
Background:
I am born in Gandhi Asramam, Sevagram, Maharashtra. I am brought up in Hyderabad. I did my schooling in LFHS and degree in Architecture at JNTC.
Entering films:
It was Aithe film that motivated me to get into films. I was awestruck with the narrative technique in that film and I became an instant fan of Chandra Sekhar Yeleti. Hanumantha Rao who works for Chandra Sekhar is a good friend of me. I met Chandra Sekhar Yeleti through Hanumantha Rao and expressed my willingness to join him. I got a call from Yeleti’s office when I went to Delhi to do practicals of Architecture. I got an offer to work in art department. Chandra Sekhar Yeleti was supposed to do a film with Uday Kiran as hero. I joined as an assistant under art director Ravinder. But that film did not take off. I worked for AOR (Anukokunda Oka Roju) film in the art department. The same team worked for Rajamouli’s Chatrapati. I acted as one of the 4 guys who follow hero Prabhas all the time in that film.
That is when I came to know that Sekhar Kammula was planning to direct a film titled Godavari. Aithe and Anand are two trendsetting films in Telugu film industry in my opinion. I went to their office in Padmarao Nagar met the co-director Praveena. I got a call from Rajahmundry when they were just about to start the shoot. I got an important character in that film.
That is when I met Anish Kuruvilla. During the time of Happy Days, Anish Kuruvilla came up with the idea of ‘Confessions of a Filmmaker’. We did that film during that time. After the super success of Happy Days, Sekhar Kammula wanted to introduce Anish as a feature film director. That is how Avakai Biryani happened. I feel lucky to have got the role of main lead in this film.
Tell us about the name of your character and specialty of it?
I can’t reveal the name of my character in this film. Avakai Biryani is about a 7-seater auto driver who has goals and ambitions. He also wants to pursue studies while working as auto driver. He is not the kind of guy who accepts defeat. He falls in love with a pickle selling girl who is also strong and ambitious.
What is Avakai Biryani?
There is always a story to the passengers who travel in an auto. But nobody has shown it from the angle of an auto driver. Avakai Biryani captures the human side of an auto driver and a pickle seller. If Happy Days is about romanticizing college life, Avakai Biryani is about romanticizing village life.
Did you do any research on auto drivers?
Yes. I observed the 7-seater auto drivers both in Hyderabad city and the villages surrounding Hyderabad. The 7-seater auto drivers in Hyderabad are very practical and they just bother about money. The 7-seater auto drivers in village are more courteous with people and they tend to have bonding with the passengers.
Any precautions for this character?
Anish wanted me to appear lean. Hence I had to shed 8 kgs of weight. I am doing the role of a guy who works hard and it should show in my appearance. And I could relate personally with the characteristic of auto driver.
Tell us about Anish Kuruvilla as a director?
Anish Kuruvilla strikes balance between art and commerce. He is also very good with actors. He narrated the film naturally without missing entertainment.
Bindu Madhavi mentioned that you are a serious actor? What is so serious about you?
I am not a guy who jokes around the set. Sekhar Kammula and Anish Kuruvilla have given me the biggest opportunity of my lifetime by making me hero in this film. I should not let them down. Hence I tried my best to be 100% dedicated to what I am doing.
Tell us about your co-actor Bindu Madhavi?
Bindu Madhavi has a tremendous potential in her as an actress. She will give Bombay-based heroines a run for their money in the future. She is an ambitious girl and she will become a big mainstream actress.
What is your gut feeling on the final product of Avakai Biryani?
It will become a classic masterpiece in Telugu that transcends all the classes.
How are you planning to mold your career?
I want to create a brand name and trust for myself that the movie should be good if Kamal Kamaraju acts in it.
Who are your favorite directors?
Rishikesh Mukherjee and Akira Kurosawa are my all time favorite directors. Asutosh Gowarikar, Dibakar Benerjee (Khosla ka Ghosla), Chandra Sekhar Yeleti, Sekhar Kammula and Anish Kuruvilla are my favorite directors among the new generation.
Who are your favorite actors?
Amitab Bachchan and Dileep Kumar from the old Hindi films. I admire Kamal Hassan and Ameer Khan for their perfectionism and the way they brought revolution in Indian films. Naseeruddin Shah is an idol for me and I remember him whenever I find a tough acting job. In Telugu, I am a huge fan of Chiranjeevi. I grew up watching his films. Chiranjeevi is the one who brought style to Telugu films.
What are your next projects?
I have five scripts with me and two of them are really nice. I will take a call on them if I could get the right people doing it.
Shreya (Swati), the protagonist of Kalavaramaye Madilo, dreams of auditioning for Rahman. This forms the essence of the film around which is structured a love story and family drama. It is a film with a lyrical title and has music as its strongpoint.
Director Satish Kasetty charts a known terrain but in the age of masala films heavily topped with songs, dances, item numbers and foreign locales, his film, Kalavaramaye Madilo, sans all this, is a roller-coaster ride of emotions. Swati's emotional reel journey is so brilliant that she makes you want to see her in every frame.
Shreya, brought up her mother (, is studying for her Chartered Accountancy and finds a part time job as a singer in a hotel to earn money. Her mother is kept in the dark about her singing, as she is averse to it. The reasons for it are revealed later.
Shreya meets Sreenu (Kamal Kamaraju) in the hotel and slowly strikes a friendship with him. Sreenu is actually on a six-month stint in India from London . The 'love' element is built up well. One night Shreya is humiliated by Rao (Vikram Gokhale) in front of everyone in the hotel for her bad singing. Sreenu then tells her that she has to get her basics right, and has to learn under Rao who he has found out is the best teacher in town.
Shreya makes an effort to become his disciple but it's not an easy task. She finally succeeds. Her next hope is to give that audition. But there are certain truths she discovers while at her guru's place. The film then is all about whether she gives the audition to Rahman and the turmoil in her mind.
The inspiration of K Vishwanath is visible, yet it is indirect and subtle. The character of the guru seems to be a character looming large from Vishwanath's canvas. But Satish chooses to be different from the master filmmaker. Though he chooses music, it is not compositions of the maestros which are sung in Kalavaramaye Madilo as in Shankarabharanam. Also, the love story is a rather urban one.
There is enough drama in Satish's story-telling but nothing new as far as the elements are concerned. It's just the way the different constituents are pieced together along with melodious music and a good background score that make for an interesting watch. The film is an emotional tear jerker as it is melodramatic but does not go over the top.
For a change, one sees the picturesque backwaters of Kerala and tea plantations of Munnar in the two song sequences instead of the run-of-the-mill foreign locales.
Sharrath Vasudevan has done a good job as a music composer and by getting Chitra to sing has added more sweetness to the melody. His debut in Telugu is worth it.
The film revolves around Swati and she is absolutely exceptional. Swati glides through the kaleidoscope of emotions smoothly when the ride is actually difficult and warrants a portrayal of many. But the felicity she displays is remarkable. Her oodles of talent come to the fore in this movie wherein she switches from the vivacious to the serious (in the character) with utmost ease.
Kamal is cool as the NRI from London. His body language is apt and makes a good pair with Swati despite the height difference. Tanikella Bharani (who plays Sastry, Vikram Gokhale's friend) is a doyen himself and nothing need be said about his acting. For, it is understood that he acts superbly. The same thing applies to Vikram Gokhale who puts in a restrained yet effective performance in his debut Telugu film. It's a treat to watch these two senior artistes on screen.
On the technical front the film is okay.
This heroine-centric film is appealing and makes for a worthwhile watch. Just go and enjoy it and let the cascade of emotions engulf you. You would probably come out and say Jai Ho to this film and cast.
The movie Might not have been a block buster , but it showcases kamal's acting skills & has opened doors for many opportunities ahead , Way to go !
Movie Stills :-
Music: Manikanth Kadri
Director: Aneesh Kuruvilla
Producer: Shekhar Kammula and Chandrasekhar Kammula
Avakaya Biryani is canned in a village backdrop and the scenario is quite pure and crystal clear. The first half of the movie is interesting and some scenes succeed in tickling the audience. But the second half lacks the zeal and the climax is well carved and is a little bit tense.
Avakaya Biryani starts with the first frame in a village back drop like a typical Shekhar Kammula movie. Akbar (Kamal Kamaraju) is the only auto driver of a 7 seater auto in a remote village. He is a paper boy of the village in the early mornings and transforms as an auto driver in the day. He is a Muslim with very broad minded thoughts. Though he is an orphan, he grows up with utmost qualities and ethics and grows up with some secular thoughts.
Akbar is constantly pestered by a Muslim leader Babar who is tries to poison the mind of Akbar with some religion related thoughts. But Akbar never deviates from his original principles and so is a well natured guy at heart.
Akbar has his friends who are dearer to him in all manners and considers Masterjee (Rao Ramesh) as his mentor.
Then the twist in Avakaya Biryani takes place as the heroine enters the life of the hero. A Brahmin family visits the village and resides in the village from then on. It is discovered by Akbar that the family is settling in the village and to earn a living they desire to open up a Tiffin center in the village.
Moreover, to gain some more earnings the Brahmin family plans to sell pickles in the nearby towns and village and the family head, who is an orthodox minded character, hands over the marketing business of the pickles to his wise daughter Laxmi (Bindu)
With no other option for transportation, Laxmi has to travel to in Akbar’s auto. After few sweet incidents the hero and the heroine fall in love. But the main hurdle is their religion and then the story goes on the usual way with some suspense and the usual drama.
Finally, all ends well and the climax is pretty much as expected by the youth.
Performances
Kamal Kamaraju who played the character of an IPS officer in the movie Godavari is the male lead in this film. He plays the character of a Muslim youngster in this film and the movie portrays in an apt role according to his body language. His expressions are according to his dialogues and his acting skills are well exposed.
Bindu Madhavi who is a typical Hyderabadi girl gives a good screen presence. Still she has to improve her dialogue deliver and is ago at the dancing skills. In some scenes she looks like a Bengali babe and with the sari below her naval she steals the eyes of every male audience.
The other characters like Rao Ramesh performed well in this film and the music is melodious and apt to the mood which the film creates,
One thing is quite clear that the movie has nothing to offer to the mass crowds, but is a family entertainer to some extent with a classic touch.
The director carved the movie in such way that it looks like the movie been directed by Shekhar himself.
On the whole Avakaya Biryani will be a respite to those who need a soothing experience and are well tailored to reach to all modes of life.
'Avakai Biryani' starring ‘Kamal Kamaraju’ as hero and ‘Bindu Madhavi’ as heroine and directed & produced by 'Anish Kuruvilla' & 'Amigos Creations Pvt Ltd. Banner' is a teen hit again.
